When a rock song stays in your head for hours after you have listened to it only once, you know that you have struck gold. That sensation of having attained the musical equivalent of Nirvana is what occurs on first listening to “Get Away” by the singer/songwriter R!N.
“Get Away” is firmly rooted in the tradition of hard-rocking women from the Wilson sisters of Heart to Pat Benatar. The guitar hook that begins the song is almost too accessible. The melody of the verse is cool and hypnotic. The chorus is animated and invigorating.
Resistance is futile. R!N holds the listener in the palm of her hand. The bridge functions as a perfect change of pace. After an instrumental break that is nicely balanced between guitar and keyboard, R!N breaks the song down into a somewhat contradictory mix of calmness and angst. It is almost impossible to comprehend the greatness of what R!N accomplishes during this bridge as she pushes forward to her glorious shout of “I’m alive!”
The song “Naked,” released with “Get Away” as a double A-side single, is every bit as hypnotic as “Get Away.” The jazzy chorus, when R!N sings “I’ve got a feeling….,” Is irresistible and memorable. The song contains an element of rap with a spoken word section. It is basically a cool jam. “Naked” might have been even better if R!N had chosen to perform the song in one of the minor modes rather than in a major key. That is an esoteric and pointless observation. “Naked” is marvelous and mesmerizing as it is.
But the factor that lifts “Get Away”/”Naked” out of the realm of run-of-the-mill mainstream rock music is the voice of R!N. R!N’s voice is strong and powerful. The tone of her voice is as pure as a mountain stream. She varies her delivery throughout both songs in a way that demonstrates a nuanced understanding of the potential of the human voice.
R!N’s vocal accents contain an undertone – actually, a pretty explicit aura – of eroticism and seduction. She uses slight catches in her voice and subtle changes of inflection to entice you into her world. R!N is almost as dangerous as a double-00 agent of Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
R!N is a compelling songwriter and an absolutely world class singer. “Get Away/Naked” is proof of that assertion. Hopefully, a full album of equally intoxicating songs will follow.ページトップの「日本語」をクリックすると、本記事の日本語版を閲覧できます。
