yonige: Power Pop Perfection in “Saikin no Koto”

Yonige’s song “Saikin no Koto” (“Recent Things”) from the mini-album Coming Spring (2015) is power pop perfection. Clocking in at a cool one minute and thirty-three seconds, the drums kick in the beat, and singer Arisa Ushimaru wastes no time in getting to the point – an irresistibly bright melody backed by her jingle jangle Les Paul. Arisa sings the verse twice, gives us a brief bridge, has made her point, and uses the last thirty seconds to play a chiming chord progression that ultimately ascends to the tonic. Bassist Gokkin, who is rarely content with simply thumping away in four/four, has enough room in the outro to throw in some of her typically clever ornamental filigrees. Gorgeous.
